Central Thailand remains relatively untouched by tourism leaving it rich in culture and local charm. Mass tourism overlooks it as visitors favour Northern Thailand and Southern Island destinations. Travelling in central Thailand while not as well developed can be more exciting than tourist destinations. It is also easily accessible for day trips from Bangkok where, at times, I’ve spent longer in Bangkok traffic than on a minibus to central Thailand. While Bangkok day trips are possible they miss out on early mornings or late evenings which often bring the best out of these locations, so it’s best to at least spend a night.
Central Thailand Locations
Ayutthaya (40 mins) – Favoured by rushed Bangkok daytrips the ancient Capital of Ayutthaya hosts some of the most spectacular temples in Thailand.
Lop Buri (2 hours) – A former Siam Capital famous for its monkeys and ancient Khmer temples.
Suphan Buri (2 hours) – Clean, affluent town best known for it’s famous Dragon Temple and Museum.
Kanchanaburi (3 hours) – Further West near the Cambodian border this riverside town is famous for its “Death Railway” and “Bridge on the River Kwai”. The Erawan Falls are a must.
Nakhon Pathom (1 hour) – Thailand’s first Buddhist City
Bangkok Daytrips and Getting there:
There are convenient connections from Bangkok’s; Bus Terminal (Mo Chit, Northern), the Minibus Terminals (Victory Monument) and Train Station (Hua Lamphong)
