You should expect to pay a premium for certain luxuries and conveniences. A rental in a good location with comfortable beds, a modern bathroom and a new kitchen costs more than basic or dated accommodation. Say your searching for an apartment and you find that the price is significantly cheaper than the average rent in Memphis Tennesee, for example, you should double-check, triple-check the description, and make sure that what you see is what you’ll get. And don’t forget to check for hidden costs such as fees to use pools, leisure facilities and parking.

Rental accommodation is often listed in more than one place, so make sure you check the reviews on multiple sites. And, ask yourself, do the reviews sound honest? Is the accommodation in the right location? What are your interests and where do you want to be based? City centre, remote island or in a complex? But beware of vague descriptions saying how far places are away from the property.

What are the facilities like? Does the accommodation offer everything you need? Think about the big items such as good air conditioning, decent views, plenty of privacy, and a large comfortable bed. Will you be needing a dishwasher, wi-fi or a luxury shower? What about the little details such as small electrical appliances, cooking and dining items, and extra bedding?
